This Valentine’s Day!
The Sanity Circus creator Tasha Mukanik and BadMouth creator J.Kiakas come together to create LGBTQ+ monster comic series: Paint the Town Red, first volume launching on Kickstarter February 14, 2019.

Answering a growing demand for heartfelt and compelling LGBTQ+ work in the indie comics sphere, Paint the Town Red is a story that, prioritizes a cast of queer characters on a more femme spectrum while maintaining the fun of monster-horror and romance. (And who doesn’t like a good vampire-werewolf love-story?)

Paint the Town Red: Volume 1.1 is the first portion of a 3-part introduction to the series. The first volume features werewolf Winona Barlowe as she struggles to come to terms with the loss of her partner and the way in which she was turned. Winona is not the only werewolf, however; she leans on the love and support of her best friend, Odile Brady, with whom she runs a shelter for lost and troubled young werewolves.

Needless to say, it comes as a shock when a wounded vampire, Victoria Darling, comes stumbling through their doors, forcing Winona to draw on her very limited knowledge of vampires. With Odile’s help, they manage to integrate Victoria into their shelter, but not without costing Winona her peace of mind and sending her into an internal turmoil she was just beginning to come to terms with.

“We’ve had this story in the works for a couple years now,” says J Kiakas, a queer storyteller living in Montreal who is best known for Prism Knights, a series of short stories on queer knights, and The Myth about Myths, their compiled visual dictionaries of mythological characters “It’s important to us to give back to a community that gave us so much love and support in our own personal discoveries. We just want to give folks a fun monster story that is cast entirely with queer characters.” Kiakas has partnered with Tasha Mukanik, a queer comic artist now living in Montreal, whose ongoing webcomic The Sanity Circus is over 500 pages. Mukanik was the first to come up with characters for Paint the Town Red the two came together naturally after this, making quick work building an exciting repertoire of characters and forming the story as it is now.
